The Language Environment Analysis Project
Children use many different types of sounds and words in early development. These early vocalizations often give a glimpse into later language and developmental skills. However, little is known about this relationship in populations with neurogenetic syndromes. Lisa Hamrick, a graduate student on Dr. Kelleher's research team (now Dr. Hamrick), was awarded an NIH F31 fellowship to conduct the Language Environment Analysis Project (LEAP), which explored how early vocalization features are related to language and social communication skills among children who are at risk for delays in these areas. LEAP recruited 3- and 4-year-olds with Down syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and fragile X syndrome.
Participation in this study was completed from home and involved three components: 1) a web-based survey, 2) two video-chat parent interview sessions, and 3) a day-long recording of the child's vocalizations. Families completed research activities one time, with activities usually completed within the span of about 2 weeks.
